Lesson Four - Poetry Writing
Objectives:
Students will use templates to create 3 poems: one on plants, one on a bird and one on an animal.
Students will use information gained from their research of different habitats.
Lesson Plans:
1. Each student will produce three poems.
2. One template must be "I Am An Animal" another must be a "Diamond" and the last must be the "Limerick" template
3. Information in the poem needs to be accurate.
4. Students will have one class period to work on this and the rest will be completed outside of class. This assignment is due in one week.
5 Their favorite poem must be posted to the blog. All three poems need to be printed out.
6. Students must comment on two of their peers poems on the blog

Evaluation:
Each poem is worth 5 points a piece for a total of 15 points. The blog post is worth 5 points so the total for this project is 20 points.
Lesson Three - smilebox/voicethread
Objectives:
Students will use their knowledge gained from their locations to create either a voicethread or smilebox presentation.
Students will post their project to the blog
Lesson Plans:
1. Students will work individually on this project.
2. Students may choose any of the three location that they went to and create either a voicethread or smilebox presentation. The presentation must include a picture of themselves, a description of the location and at least TWO pictures of plant, animal and bird. There must be descriptions included with their species. Students may also use knowledge gained from viewing their peers community nature walks. Hint hint!
3. Students will have two days to work on this in class. One day they will explore and learn both tools - the other day they will work on their own project. There will be one week total to complete this project.
4. Students will post their finished project to the blog under Lesson Three.

Total points is 50. 10 points for their picture and description, 5 points a piece for each image and description of their images for a total of 30 and 10 points for any information they included that they learned from another community walk. Sources MUST be recognized!

Students will work together efficiently and equally in preparing a collaborative project.
Lesson Plans:
1. We will have the computer lab to go through the steps of the community walk website.
2. Students will practice making "sample" community walks of their favorite stores, restraunts, etc.
3. Students will have one month to complete their community walk - they must have all three locations with the three types of species included in their project. We will have the computers in class a total of 4 times in 4 weeks to work on this part of the project.
4. Students will post their finished project to the blog under Lesson Two so that others may view.

Students will be able to identify one animal, plant, and bird that lives in each habitat.
Students will use reference books and on-line resources to identify and learn more about their species.
Students will use a field journal which includes sketches, maps and notes.
Students will use a camera to document their locations.
Lesson Plans:
1. Students will work in groups of two or three. At least one person in the group needs a cell phone capable of taking pictures and/or a camera.
2. Students will have one month to work on this project. They must visit 3 different habitat in the Billings area. Areas may include backyards, city parks, riverfront parks, or county parks. At each area students need to take a picture of their group to document that they were at each location. Students also need to take pictures of the different species they identify. If they are unable to take a picture but know what types of birds/animals live in that specific area they may download an image from the computer. Thess pictures will be used in Lessons Two and Three.
3. Students need to keep a field journal for each area that is visited. The journal needs to include notes with detailed descriptions, sketches of different plants and animal which include labels,(including plant samples) and a sketch or map of the area that they are in.
4. Students will need to use book references and on-line resources to help them identify their species.One class period per week will be devoted to using reference materials to identify species and research them.
5. Students will add comments/questions to the blog

The Field Journals will be graded for this lesson. Each location is worth 100 points for a total of 300pts. For each habitat there must be a complete description of the location - 20pts. There must be a map drawn and labeled - 20pts. For each species there must be a drawing - 5pts, the drawing labeled - 5 pts and a detailed description of their species - 10 pts.
Students must enter a comment or question to the blog - 5pts

Community Nature Walk Assignment
This assignment is designed to get students outside exploring their surroundings including documenting and writing about their experiences. Students will need to go to three different places such as their own backyard, city and/or county parks. Students will need to keep a field journal for each location and provide documentation by taking pictures. Plants, animals and birds will need to be identified by using a variety of resources including books and on-line references. All of their findings will be uploaded to make a community nature walk for Billings. A voicethread or smilebox presentation will be created by students as well as a poem. This will be a very fun and enjoyable month long activity.
