Lesson Four - Poetry Writing

Objectives:
Students will use templates to create 3 poems: one on plants, one on a bird and one on an animal.
Students will use information gained from their research of different habitats.

Lesson Plans:
1. Each student will produce three poems.
2.  One template must be "I Am An Animal" another must be a "Diamond" and the last must be the "Limerick" template
3. Information in the poem needs to be accurate.
4. Students will have one class period to work on this and the rest will be completed outside of class. This assignment is due in one week.
5 Their favorite poem must be posted to the blog. All three poems need to be printed out.
6. Students must comment on two of their peers poems on the blog

Write an Instant I am an Animal Poem

Method:


Line 1     I am   
Line 2       as   
Line 3     I   
Line 4     I   
Line 5     I can 
Line 6     I can 
Line 7     I am (repeat from line 1)

I am a bear
Grizzled
as an old man's beard
I
 eat berries and fish
I
 sleep all winter long
I can
smell food from a mile away

run up to 30 mph

Write an Instant Diamond Poem

Method:

Line 1 - a one word noun that is the opposite of the bottom noun in Line 7
 

Line 2 - 2 adjectives that describe the top noun
 

Line 3 - 3 verbs that the top noun does
 

Line 4 - 4 nouns that the top noun and the bottom noun both have
  

Line 5 - 3 verbs that the bottom noun does
 

Line 6 - 2 adjectives that describe the bottom noun
 

Line 7 - a one word noun that is the opposite of the top noun in Line 1

Method:

There once was a named .
Who ate .
But the ,

They were .

Sample:

There once was a pelican named Izzie.
Who ate fishes until she was dizzy.
But the fishes didn't mind,
To be treated so unkind.
They were just glad to keep her so busy.


Evaluation: 
Each poem is worth 5 points a piece for a total of 15 points. The blog post is worth 5 points so the total for this project is 20 points.
